Samuel Luckhurst has called on Martin Atkinson to provide an explanation of his decisions during the West Ham and Manchester United match.
The chief Red Devils writer for the Manchester Evening News claimed on his Twitter account that both sides deserved an explanation from the referee after his display on Sunday.
Cristiano Ronaldo appeared to be denied two penalties, while there were further shouts for another penalty against the Irons.
“It’s in the Premier League’s interests Martin Atkinson gives Manchester United (and West Ham) an explanation for his penalty decision,” Luckhurst wrote.
Shocking afternoon from the referee?
This match was absolutely fantastic to watch, and the Irons were so unlucky not to take anything from the game.
However, Mark Noble couldn’t deliver at the crucial moment, and the Red Devils escaped with three points.
Despite this, the game could have been so different had Atkinson decided to award what looked to be a couple of blatant penalties for either side.
The Hammers appeared to be denied a clear penalty when Tomas Soucek was taken out by Aaron Wan-Bissaka only for Atkinson to give the Red Devils a free-kick [Sky Sports].
Then the Red Devils appeared to be denied two clear penalties as well.
So, it was a poor display from Atkinson, and we can see why Luckhurst feels that both sides are owed an explanation from the referee.
Certainly, that penalty in the second half for the Irons could have totally changed the match, and the referees have to be better.
