When West Ham sold Sebastien Haller to Ajax last January, not many expected to see his name up in lights alongside AC Milan great, Marcelo van Basten eight months down the line.
Well, the 27-year-old, who West Ham purchased for £45 million in 2019 (Sky Sports), did just that on his Champions League debut on Wednesday night.
Ajax put five goals past Sporting Lisbon and four of those came via the foot of Haller’s, as a certain Didier Drogba was wowed by what he was watching, as he posted on Instagram.
Only Van Basten has achieved such a feat on debut, the Dutchman’s strikes came against Gothenburg during the inaugural Champions League in 1992.
Now, Haller, 27, can proudly tell his grandkids that he was able to match one of the greats of the game.
And to be fair, that list will probably remain small because, as records suggest, not many are going to be able to match such a feat.
Nonetheless, this is what Chelsea legend Drogba posted on Instagram about Haller, as he stated ‘country of talents’ and ‘country of legends’ when reacting to the striker’s achievements.
Drogba said: “Made in C tete d’Ivoire. Country of talents and country of legends. So proud to see you shining in both national and club selection.”
A number of West Ham players will be making their European bow this evening when they take on Dinamo Zagreb in Croatia.
Perhaps Michail Antonio can channel his inner Haller and score four goals on his Europa League debut.
To be fair, given the form the hard-hitting forward is in then you wouldn’t put it past the bloke.
This is a big chance for the Hammers, who will be one of the favourites, to win this competition because they certainly have the talent to do so.
