Mats Hummels details what makes reported Liverpool target Jude Bellingham special

Borussia Dortmund centre-back Mats Hummels has revealed what he thinks sets his club team-mate and reported Liverpool transfer target Jude Bellingham apart.

The 18-year-old midfielder is considered one of the hottest prospects in football, having joined BVB from Birmingham City in the summer of 2020. He turned down the chance to move to Manchester United.

Bellingham went on to enjoy a fine debut season at the Westfalenstadion, with a memorable goal in the Champions League against Manchester City the highlight.

A call up to the England squad for the European Championships in the summer followed and all the indications are that he is ready to go up another gear this season.

Hummels has clearly been impressed by Bellingham too, per the Bundesliga website.

“Mario Gotze was already a magnificent footballer at that age, he took his football very seriously,” said the veteran Germany defender. “But Jude is the most mature 18-year-old player I’ve ever seen. He’s already a leader and also one of the most vocal in the team.

“He’s a fantastic footballer, and a fantastic guy. I think I’ve told him about 25 times now that I just love him. He’s on his way to the very top, there’s no doubt about that.”

As noted on the Bundesliga website, Bellingham has already contributed to six goals this season.

When you consider some of the elite talent Hummels has played alongside at club and international level in his distinguished career, it may surprise some that his praise for the England tyro is so effusive.

However, Bellingham has already showcased a composure on the biggest stages, impressing in the Champions League and in all of his eight senior appearances for England.

For Liverpool, he would be an exciting acquisition. It was reported by the Daily Star the Anfield club are ready to pay £80 million for Bellingham’s signature.

The Reds are well stocked in midfield, although the club will surely be thinking about the next generation of options in the engine room to take over from the likes of Jordan Henderson and James Milner.

Bellingham would be a pillar to build around for years to come.
