Man City ‘unlikely’ to return for Harry Kane

Manchester City failed in their pursuit of Harry Kane and have made a decision on whether they’ll return for him next summer. Dean Smith of Eurosport says the Premier League champions are ‘unlikely’ to go back in for Kane, adding that the 28-year-old ‘may sign a new contract’ with Tottenham Hotspur.

Sergio Aguero was released on a free transfer after his contract expired over the summer and went on to join Barcelona. That left a void in attack that Pep Guardiola wanted Kane, Kylian Mbappe, Romelu Lukaku or Erling Haaland to fill.

He’s been unable to do that, however, which is why Ferran Torres is being used in the makeshift role. But Kane may no longer be a target for City. Next year, he’ll be 29 years of age with a £150m asking price, so he might not be value for money, even with 223 goals from 340 games at Spurs.

Haaland will be available for €75m in the summer of 2022 and boasts 65 goals goals in 65 games for Borussia Dortmund, so he might be the better investment. City will be one of many clubs after the 21-year-old, but his ceiling is as high as Kane’s given his already-outstanding scoring record.
