Fans and pundits react after Mike Maignan’s impressive performance in Liverpool vs. Milan in the Champions League, as Gianluigi Donnarumma continued on the Paris Saint-Germain bench.
The discussions regarding Italy international Gianluigi Donnarumma’s decision to move to PSG continued after Wednesday’s fixtures in the Champions League.
But Milan are certain Maignan is the right replacement after the match against Liverpool this weekend.
The French shot stopper saved a Mo Salah penalty and did well to keep Milan in the game against Liverpool, but ultimately he couldn’t stop the Reds from claiming three points in a 3-2 win at Anfield.
In an interview with Tuttomercatoweb, former Rossoneri shot stopper Mario Ielpo claimed Maignan ‘gives an impression of guarding the goal even more than Donnarumma’, but pointed at his insecurity on the 2-2 goal, when Salah equalised one-on-one with the goalkeeper.
La Gazzetta dello Sport claims Maignan has the qualities to grow further and enough personality to become a leader at San Siro.
‘Milan are in excellent hands’, the newspaper writes and highlights the Rossoneri know they can count on their new goalkeeper.
Maignan arrived from LOSC Lille after winning Ligue 1 last season and Donnarumma moved to France, where he has struggled to compete with Keylor Navas.
Donnarumma still waits for his debut in the Champions League, as Navas was preferred once again in the PSG goal.
Fans on Twitter reacted to the news of Donnarumma being benched for the opening game against Club Brugge, as PSG drew 1-1 against the Belgians in Bruges. “He could have worn the captain’s armband with his boyhood club.”
