Joe Rodon has stated that he is currently ‘happy’ with where his fitness is ahead of Tottenham’s tie against Rennes on Thursday evening, as he told Football London.
Spurs are currently in France where they will be opening their Europa Conference League accounts against the Ligue 1 side.
Over the weekend, Rodon featured his first game of the campaign and is in contention to start tonight with injuries, suspensions and players self-isolating meaning that Nuno Espirito Santo has a limited number of defenders to choose from.
It would be more welcome minutes for Rodon because, since Jose Mourinho’s departure, he hasn’t spent much time out on the pitch.
But Rodon, ahead to this evening’s European tie, shared a positive update on his fitness and sharpness.
“Right now, I’m happy,” said Rodon. “Of course the more games you play the better conditions you’re going to be.
“Saturday, I was dusting myself off and getting the cobwebs out but yeah I was happy to get just under 90 minutes under my belt at the weekend just gone.
“But, of course, the more games I play the fitter I’m going to be. But I’m happy with where I am right now and I’ll keep working.”
It seems as though Eric Dier, Davinson Sanchez, Cristian Romero and Japhet Tanganga are ahead of Rodon in the centre-back pecking order.
But Dier limped off against Palace, Tanganga is suspended for the weekend, and the South American duo are self-isolating.
Either way, it has opened up a few doors for Rodon, who now has a great chance to keep his place in the XI.
It looks as though he will start this evening, but if he puts in a positive display, will Nuno keep him in the XI for Chelsea?
That’s a much tougher tie, and if Spurs defend like they did against Palace, then a certain Romelu Lukaku will enjoy himself.
Either way, another defeat to a London club on Sunday then frustrations will start to grow on the north side.
