Alan Shearer has said on Match of the Day 2 on BBC One (11:09pm, September 19, 2021) that Manchester United forward Cristiano Ronaldo was denied “an absolute penalty” against West Ham United at London Stadium.
The Newcastle United legend believes that the challenge from West Ham right-back Vladimír Coufal on Ronaldo was a penalty.
A challenge from Coufal saw the United forward go down inside the West Ham penalty box.
However, referee Martin Atkinson decided not to award the Red Devils a penalty.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side won 2-1 against West Ham at London Stadium yesterday.
Shearer said on Match of the Day 2 on BBC One (11:09pm, September 19, 2021): “This is an absolute penalty as well. No doubt about that.
“Definite penalty. He has got him where he wants to. He is waiting for him to commit, he commits, and he sticks his leg out and he fouls him.”
The Times have reported that at a referees’ meeting today, it has been said that Atkinson should have been asked to review the incident on the pitchside monitor.
The match officials have reportedly been told that there was ‘knee-on-knee contact with Ronaldo’, and that a penalty should have been awarded.
Ronaldo did score in the match, but we all know that the former Real Madrid and Juventus star is never happy to find the back of the net just once.. or even twice. He always wants more and more.
You do feel for the Portuguese for yesterday, although we should also point out that the challenge on Tomas Soucek by Aaron Wan-Bissaka was worthy of a penalty as well.
