Eric Dier gives honest review of Tottenham’s ‘sloppy’ display against Chelsea

Eric Dier has claimed Tottenham ‘needed to be a bit smarter’ when dealing with adversity during their defeat to Chelsea.

Spurs were swept aside 3-0 by the Blues, after goals from Thiago Silva, N’Golo Kante and Antonio Rudiger sent Thomas Tuchel’s side to the top of the Premier League table.

The match marked the second defeat in a row for Spurs, despite winning their opening three league games 1-0 to go into the international break at the summit of the table.

All three strikes came in the second half, despite what was a promising showing from Nuno Espirito Santo’s side in the opening 45 minutes.

Spurs harried Chelsea and surprised them with their aggressive style of play, but saw their efforts fall away after the break with Chelsea turning on the style.

Silva and Kante’s tallies came just a handful of minutes apart, much to the frustration of Dier, who believes his side could have done more to avoid both of them happening to stay in the game.

Dier said (Standard): “We played very well in the first half and we have to focus on that. We have to take the positives from that and build on it. Second half, they were the better team.

“We conceded the first goal very early in the second half and then lacked a bit of control to stay in the game and not concede the second. We needed to try to build and get back to the way we were playing.

“But we conceded again and it became very difficult. We lacked that control a little bit but they were sloppy goals, all three of them.

“We can do so much better. We were a little erratic in that moment. We need to just be a bit smarter, stay in the game for five minutes and try to get back on the front foot.”

Spurs ultimately let the game fall away from them, with Chelsea’s first two goals being completely avoidable. Poor marking from a corner and a big deflection were both enough to take the game away from Spurs, who could’ve done more to prevent them initially.
